zvi: Nelly and Justin Timberlake look astonished: Shock & Awe. (astonishment)
So, one of the people I follow on twitter is [x.com profile] bibliotech and she's awesome in that she's always posting links to new social media/app websites, but, like, 70% of the time I look at the website and think, but why?

And I thought "but why?" when I first saw Rebel Mouse, but then I started my own, and it's actually amazing.

It grabs the links from my social media feeds (it could do more feeds if I were more interesting, but at this point it's grabbing from dreawmidth, twitter, and google plus for me. You can also do Facebook, instagram, flicker, tumblr, pinterest, and any random rss link.) And it makes you a front page, sort of like the Huffington Post front page. It includes an image or video automatically, if the link has that.

I love it, it's amazing. Not that anyone is following me, but it actually serves as a really clear picture of the things I'm interested in. I go look at it every day or two and I think, "Yes, that's me in a web nutshell."

Follow me on RebelMouse!

Why didn't anyone tell me that server side includes exist? All of my problems with menus … gone in a single minor line of text … <!--#include virtual="menu.inc"-->

Just a whee bit of commentary.

Just a ….

Omigod. Omigod, omigod, omigod.

I just. Brainhurty. Ow.

I am http://zvi.vox.com/

But, okay, Mena Trott has described Vox (aka Comet) as the blogging tool for your mom. And that is exactly what it is like. It's like a tool designed for someone who has, heretofore, used their computer only for word processing and e-mail. Maybe a tax program. Whatever programs are required for work, too, but this is someone who uses the minimum number of features to get the job done (even if that means taking the long, long way round to get it done) and who will not consult a help menu to save their life.

But that means that doing things that seem basic (like inserting a URL into an entry) are unfriendly to anyone who has ever used, say, a command line, or hand-coded their html. I had to push a button and walk through a wizard in order to post a URL.

And the shenanigans involved in crediting [livejournal.com profile] lunaris1013 with my icon were…sad. Sad and strange.

I do not foresee a mass migration of fandom to Vox from LJ. We just, damn, we know too much.
