Some Podcasts That I Recommend
Monday, 21 December 2015 22:16I just found
getinterrupted / Girls Interrupting website / Girls Interrupting RSS feed. Once a month they talk for about an hour; more frequently they talk about a few issues of a single title for 5-20 minutes. It's great! It's a comics podcast with four women talking about comics. They care about feminism and have strong opinions. Between the four of them, they read Marvel, DC, and independent stuff. It's like fannish friends having a conversation around you, but you don't have to participate or do anything, and if they say something you don't understand, you can rewind.
I also like Big Planet Comics podcast. Three comic book store employees from a local DC chain talk about comic books, mostly #1 issues. Also, they discuss upcoming comics-related news and answer listener questions. (I recently sent them 13, they're doling them out slowly.) This is the best of what an LCS can do for you. (Aside from adding stuff to your pullbox that you would definitely like.)
Criminal is a very calm podcast about crime. Sometimes it talks about a case from the POV of the criminal, sometimes the investigator, sometimes the victim, sometimes the falsely accused. Sometimes it's not about a specific incident, but about criminal (investigation) procedure. But it is very much interested in letting someone tell their story. It can be funny. As much as a story about crime can be, it can be sweet. Sometimes the crimes are brutal, sometimes they're property crimes, sometimes it's a story about skirting the law. It's a very human sort of podcast.
No Such Thing As A Fish is an extremely informative laugh riot. Researchers for the British quiz show QI each share their favorite fact, and some facts related to that fact, and they try to crack everyone up while doing it. Often, they succeed.
Some bonus stuff I don't feel like writing up, but definitely do recommend: Pop Culture Happy Hour, Planet Money, 99% Invisible (about design, broadly speaking), The Vergecast (tech nerds talking way too long), The comiXologist.
