Oh, Merlin (2x01 spoilers)
Monday, 21 September 2009 17:31( spoilers, not kidding ) Except for that, this show is still cute and dumb as a box of rocks.
Is Scotland currently part of the United Kingdom? Per Wikipedia, yes.
More importantly for my purposes, do you all get BBC One? Have you seen Merlin yet? Are you ready toshare talk about it in such great detail over the internets that it feels as if I have seen it, because I would never infringe the BBC's copyright, no never?
I am ridiculously ready for Series 2. I don't even know why, it's not like I like the show that much. I mean, I do like it, but it's not a favorite. It's a big dumb puppy of a show, cute and winning but almost terminally stupid.
But I want to see GWEN and MORGANA and MERLIN and ARTHUR and even Gaius. Wouldn't it be awesome if they brought Lancelot back? (No spoilers!) Will the slash dragon be just as insistent that Merlin/Arthur are the bestest ship that ever sailed? Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait.
In other TV news, I saw The Beautiful People. I like it. I like that it's fully of bitchy people who are mean to each other and using one another sexually, and I like the lead actress, whose name I've completely forgotten. I was disappointed Corbin Bleu is a special guest star, rather than a regular, but at least there's an in universe explanation for why such a tiny man (he's cute, but he's pocket-sized) could be a professional model. I like Mischa Barton's ~angst~. I even liked the male lead for the 3 seconds where he took a stand against being a surprise!prostitute.
It's trashy, and not very bright, but it's sort of glittery and I like it. The one way to make this show improve is to keep the male and female leads away from each other; their 'innocence' and 'niceness' is annoying enough individually, but completely unbearable (and a bizarre tonal shift from the rest of the show) when they're together.
Also, frankly, it would help if the male lead were hotter, so you could figure out why he'd been procured.
In other, other news … my waterbed sprung a leak. This is not fun. Nor is it funny, the way they promise you in the movies.

First Thoughts
Monday, 22 December 2008 10:04I've started watching Merlin. I'm halfway through series one and I'm not entirely sure what I think of it. It has its moments, but they beat the character leitmotifs a bit heavily to start (Arthur: an assy tool; Uther: an assier tool who is phobic about magic; Merlin: wants to be a rock superstar; Gaius: cautious about the magic use; Guin: Madame Malaprop; class: a big, big obstacle to getting things done.)
One thing I really do appreciate though is that when people come to Uther and say, "Hey, that new lady or lord who just appeared on the scene is totally planning to kill Arthur, or you, or Morgana?" he always asks them, "Er, why do you think that? Do you have any proof?"
They rarely have a good answer because they've found this stuff out by magic or sneaking around where they don't belong, but I appreciate that Uther would be willing to listen if they, you know, had a reason. I'm wondering when it's going to start occurring to people to start manufactoring non-magic evidence before they tell Uther about others' murderous intent, though.
