zvi: Lex Luthor: It's mercy, compassion, and forgiveness I lack, not rationality. (meta)
There is a comment meta post at [community profile] fem_thoughts, which you should look at and see if you have thoughts (any kind of thoughts! Of whatever length or thoughtfulness!) about femslash and things around femslash.

Some threads of interest to me: I posted two things there that I wanted to pull into my journal, which are not really about femslash or the topics above. Point 1, about my favorite narrative OF ALL TIME
I don't know if it's a trope that we see in fandom so much, but it's definitely common in the source material, and it's the Breakfast Club/Beauty & the Beast, where people who wouldn't choose to be together are thrown in with one another by circumstances beyond their control, and they then have a shared understanding of the world that can't be really explained to outsiders.

Also, I have just figured out why I am so gaga for Teen Wolf, JFC.
Point 2, about women on Teen Wolf
The thing that I find extremely frustrating about Teen Wolf's approach to gender is that you have a lot of Minority Police Captain syndrome going on, where women are named as being in charge, but then for various story reasons are effectively powerless.
  • Laura Hale is a dead body who was the Hale pack alpha before the series started.
  • The Argents claim that women are their war leaders, but Victoria Argent wasn't introduced in the series until several episodes after her husband Chris in season 1, and is immediately undercut by her father-in-law Gerard when he appears, and Allison functions as titular leader for a handful of episodes while always dancing to her grandfather's tune.
  • Last but not least, we are repeatedly told that Lydia Martin is a queen of the social scene, but we never see her wield that power over anyone except Jackson and Stiles, and, by the time we see her attempt to use it, her juice has evaporated because of that one time when she was assaulted by a psycho at prom and then ran away from the hospital and wandered the woods naked for, like, two days.

So, in June, there was con.txt, which was awesome. It was, as usual, beautifully run, even despite the fact that the hotel was under construction while we were there.

I got in Thursday and had dinner with, uh, [profile] trixiesfic, [personal profile] arallara, [personal profile] hederahelix, and some other people. Then we went to see the Avengers, again. We stayed right through schwarma, which, you know, I really like this movie, but they're not doing anything in that scene. I don't get it.

Friday )

Saturday )

Sunday ) This con.txt, I really did a lot of panelling, which is something I haven't done at a con in maybe 3 years, not even so much at the last con.txt. Although the conversations were mostly not super deep, I really enjoyed having them in a semi-structured way with people I don't know or don't know well. Did regret not seeing more of Aral and Hederahelix and even Zana. It seems like I can pick socializing or panels, and that is all the social energy I have for a weekend.

Two weekends ago I went to Con*Strict. As this year's attendance was down to about twenty, it was more in the way of a pajama party than a con, but I had fun there too. Due to some bizarre Vegas-ness (Joey Fatone was hosting the Price is Right Live, so that killed my Friday afternoon, and then getting tickets to Zumanity killed my Saturday afternoon) I missed a lot of time hanging out at the con itself (and in the hotel pool), but I got to spend a lot of time with Caorann and I did spend some time in the con, just chilling with people, talking about how weird Vegas is (it's drier than winter but so hot!), having a little Avengers squee and telling people why Once Upon a Time had/has potential. I came away with some tv from the back of the internet, Lost Girl and Once Upon a Time and Teen Wolf, so I can see what all the fuss is about. It was fun and I've already paid my membership for next year, but I think that I will go a day or two early and stay a day or two late so I can check out Vegas more thoroughly.

Also, I bought a bunch of Chihuly postcards, so I will send some out to people whose addresses I have, because I love that glass, it's so sexy.

Hmm, I had some thoughts about ~religion~ that I wanted to share with you, dwircle, but I've been writing for two hours without any dinner, and also I need to clean my room, so laters.

I ran three panels at con.txt this year. Two of them were "Make a List of Things That Were Awesome", so I am now coming back to actually share the lists with people.

Femslash Fandom Faire spreadsheet, which lists the Name, Medium, and genre of everything on the list. Feel free to add links! I have put in a few to get you started.

Subtext is Not the Only Text which lists the name, medium, and genre of actual queer media. Please add links about these stories and links to where to buy them, if they are for sale!

I am modding 3 panels: Subtext is not the only text (share your favorite canonically QUILTBAG media), Femslash Fandom Faire (share your favorite femslashy canons), Hot Girl-on-Girl Action (write girlporn! post girlporn! encourage girlporn!).

There are a number of panels that look good on the full con.txt schedule that I'm not going to attend or that I'll see what I feel like once I get there. I'm getting in Thursday night. Anyone looking to dinner somewhere that's not the hotel restaurant? I bought a box lunch for Saturday but I'll probably be looking to lunch out on Friday (unless I go swimming.)

I still need need to get a new icon. :/

So, I am going to [community profile] con_txt next month, and, because I thought this panel sounded totally awesome and there was a good chance it wouldn't happen if I didn't volunteer to mod it, I volunteered to mod the panel described thusly:
Hot Girl on Girl Action In stories, we mean. Not Live. Probably. How to write good f/f porn, where to promote it, and how to encourage more to magically appear.)
That sounds like a totally awesome panel, right? Well, I have a teensy, tiny problem, in that I have been sort of…distanced from fandom lately? Like, I never post to my LJ, and I don't write any more (fic or meta or even episode reactions), and I do not know what the best place is to promote f/f stories right now. If there are new and fascinating places to post one's femslash that are not [community profile] girlgay or [livejournal.com profile] femslash_today, I would really love to hear about them.

Also, if you have thoughts or feelings about either how to write more f/f porn or how to encourage more f/f porn, I would love to hear that also. I may even, depending on the scope of my lazy, create a wee little handout for people at my panel to take home.

Basically, what I am saying is, help me help us get more femslash going. Please, yes, thank you!

What this is all about by [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda I'm not telling you to panic and run around screaming (my icon aside). I'm not even telling you to flee Livejournal. I'm telling you that, in order to understand what someone will do next, and to decide what you want to do in response, you need to know what their goals are.

This show seems, well, inappropriate for a channel called the Family Channel. It's about sex, lies, and knowing what you did last summer.

It is also a story about teenage girls, their relationships with each other, and their mamas.

Five girls were inseparable in sophomore year. Then the mean one, Allison (Sasha Pieterse) disappeared from a sleepover. The other four drifted apart. We have:

Aria: rebel without a cause. Or much rebellion, actually, because her parents support her individuality. (Hey, if your mom were Holly Marie Combs, she'd probably be pretty chill, too.) (there's some boring issues with her dad which I hope get quickly resolved, and some much less boring issues with this dude she's interested in, which I still hope get quickly resolved because that relationship is SO DUMB on both their parts.) Played by Lucy Hale.

Hannah: She used to be the (for TV values of fat) fat one. Now she's the skinny, fashionable, popular, but secretly troubled girl. (shoplifting, lies, poor nutrition!) Has a minion, Mona, who used to be a dweeb, but is now almost as cool as Hannah. Played by Ashley Benson

Emily: She's a swimmer. Who likes to make out with girls. ♥ ♥ She actually seems to be like a decent human being, and gets along with her mom, as played by Nia Peebles. This family may actually be intended to be read as ethnic, since both Shay Mitchell and Nia Peebles are mixed white/Filipino. (She makes out with the girl who moved into Allison's house, Maya, who is played by Bianca Lawson [Kendra from Buffy.])

Spencer: She's the sort of girl who wears tailored clothing in high school. You might dismiss her as super straight laced, except she keeps making plays for her older sister's men. I sort of can't blame her, the sister is that favored older child who grabs up all of the good air in the family. Played by Troian Bellisario

In any case, vague and unspecific ominous happenings occur, wispy dollops of sexual tension from many sides, secrets are alluded to but not stated directly, and two enemies from without force the four girls to draw tightly together in an unhappy knot of secretkeepers.

This is super relevant to my interests, and I'm quite glad [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi convinced me to watch. The pilot is re-running tonight at 7 p.m. and the second episode will threepeat at 8, 9, and 10. (ETA: Also available on Hulu)

Femslash10 signups are open. Don't let me be there all alone with my Drop Dead Diva request. Also, I sort of hope that there are lots of request for True Blood Tara/Sookie stories. Because there should be.

[livejournal.com profile] femslash09 has started polling to decide which fandoms to feature.

In additional voting news, We Invented the Remix Redux (redux, because it came after popslash remix, so few of you remember that!) is voting on some rules changes: qualifying stories and RPF fandoms. They're also looking for people to tell them that other people do, in fact, have the qualifying stories they claim listed.

Last by a mile, but not at all least, the Transformative Works & Cultures journal has a Call for Papers on a Race & Fandom Special Issue. This wouldn't appear until summer 2011. [livejournal.com profile] ithiliana is one of the editors, so I expect it won't be a complete disaster. Not sure who Sarah Gatson is, though.

I am torn between wanting to write something and not, or rewriting Jazz in the Machine to be more militant and use more modern examples (gives Psych fandom the stinkeye.) I don't know. They're taking submissions until October 2010, so it's not as if I don't have time to think about it.

My thoughts on American Idol

  1. I love Allison. Not her best performance, not her worst. Too bad Janie's Got a Gun was never in a movie.

  2. My new name is Mrs. Anoop Desai )

  3. Adam almost got my vote for his fantabulous Axl Rose impersonation…then he ruined the whole thing with a maneuver I called the Vocal Quickening. You know what Adam? Too much is more than enough.

  4. Put the Go in Gokey.

  5. I did greatly appreciate that the judges told Matt that he COMPLETELY RUINED MY FAVORITE BRYAN ADAMS' SONG.

  6. Simon and Kara both drank stupid juice tonight. Kris was all sorts of a mess for the first half of that song (although he worked it out at the end), and tonight was the first great performance Lil has had since the finals started. I wonder if they were doing that thing where they were judging based on the sound in rehearsals?
