So, my favorite kind of fanfiction is characters negotiating their relationships, and this fic series is relationship negotiations all the way down! Primary pairing is Jin Zixuan/Jiang Cheng, equal billing is the relationshis between Jin Guangshan's offspring, secondary (which still means two long stories and parts of others) to 3zun, wth some Yungmeng siblings and some MianMian/Jiang Yanli thrown in for good measure, plus one meditation on JFM's A+ parenting.

Despite the title, MiamMian is only a main character in one story in the series. Do not read this fic for MianMian.

People recovering from narcissistic and abusive parents, people negotiating class diferences, some BDSM thrown in as a treat, this series is fantastic.

What if Wen Ruohan isn't bad, he's mostly bored and lonely and the cultivation equivalent of a billionaire. (Ok, you don't get to be a billionaire without doing a lot of bad shit [or benefitting from a spouse or ancestor's bad shit], but you can choose to be better.)

What if Lan Quiren and his B+ parenting makes Wen Ruohan choose to be better?

I love this fic: it's funny, it's romantic, it's excellent kid fic, and the larger cultivation world plot (we do get there, eventually) works, too. Fuck QHJ.

Loving

zvi: Gogo Yubari (Kill Bill): Movie Critic (movie critic)
This was a sweet, romantic movie. Like all of the reviews have noted, while it's clear that the reason we are watching a movie about these two people is because they filed the suits that led to anti-miscegenation laws being ruled unconstitutional in these United States, the story is about how much they loved each other.

I really like this story as a way of telling an interesting story about two people who are in love and in fundamental agreement with one another. more gushing about Loving; please, please, please go see it. it's great )

In less terrific media consumed this week, I was not impressed with The Shakespeare Theatre's production of The Secret Garden. Firstly, not having read about the musical and only basing my assumptions on some half-remembered dramatic films from my youth, I was not prepared for the dead Greek chorus. 2 more reasons it was not good ) I was pleased to see so many little girls in the audience. Hopefully, their taste is not developed enough for them to know that this play was not particularly good, and they'll ask to come back for Shakespearean comedy.

Anyway, I would skip this one, you guys. Go see Black Nativity instead, I saw it last year with my parents and it was terrific.

Oh! I didn't read anything today. I downloaded some stuff for New Comics Day without actually reading anything. But!

A fanfiction thing I have been reading to deal with 2016 and everything horrible is The Sweetest Thing series by uena. This is exactly what it says on the tin, a super sweet slice of life series. It's 50 stories/232k words so far.

It's a Three Musketeers (BBC 2014) modern AU, Porthos/Aramis, Athos/Porthos/Aramis story, and it's just about the three of them loving each other very much. That's it! That's the story! They love each other. Sometimes they're sad and then they comfort each other! Sometimes, a third party says something mean and then one of the other two tells the mean person off while the third one gives cuddles! Their parents are lovely. Porthos is a social worker at an orphanage. Aramis makes clothes with Constance. Athos is an artist; he also makes heavenly coffee. D'Artagnan is a bike messenger who is in love with Constance. They adopt some cats. (Later, Porthos will adopt a pregnant lady that he hired to build a playground for his cats, because he is that kind to animals and people and loves children so much.)

Anyway, it is sweetness and light and comfort, which some of us may need badly at this difficult time.

You do not need to know The Three Musketeers to read this fic.

The Shakespeare Theatre is putting on a quite delightful Romeo and Juliet. It's got a largely contemporary feel, except for a total absence of mobile devices. Romeo and Juliet are both played as being very young and foolish, passionate rather than earnest, which is exactly how I prefer it. Romeo is a bit reminiscent of DiCaprio in Romeo+ Juliet, but Juliet is much sassier than Danes.

The interpretation I found most unusual was Mercutio. He was very dry, almost like a young Eddie Izzard. The Queen Mab speech was… flat and dull are both wrong, but it had the sense of being off the cuff and ridiculousness piled on fancy topped with silliness, but it wasn't whimsical. He was saying something stupidly and seriously at length until Romeo said it was dumb and Mercutio could agree with him. Also, I felt like he was maybe a bit gay for Tybalt, but in an unhealthy down low way. I couldn't quite tell if I was slashily over reading or not.

I also rather liked Lord Capulet in this. His performance reminded me a lot of my dad, mostly being fun dad and wanting to do stuff for his kid, but pissed when you step out of line (except my dad's not actually abusive about it).

Friar Laurence was tough for me to get a read on. His affect was always appropriate to the immediate scene, but I wasn't sure I followed who the whole character was. Not sure if that was the actor or just the way it's written. However, seated in the row ahead of me were four white frocked? Habited? Robed? Priestly types. I masterfully restrained on asking if this was supposed to be a group lesson on what not to do, but it was difficult.

In the final analysis, I really enjoyed this performance. I wasn't really expecting to; the last R and J they did was the stodgy full male cast I mostly resented, and I've certainly seen this play before. But this felt fresh and adolescent and I recommend that you go.

I just found [twitter.com profile] getinterrupted / Girls Interrupting website / Girls Interrupting RSS feed. Once a month they talk for about an hour; more frequently they talk about a few issues of a single title for 5-20 minutes. It's great! It's a comics podcast with four women talking about comics. They care about feminism and have strong opinions. Between the four of them, they read Marvel, DC, and independent stuff. It's like fannish friends having a conversation around you, but you don't have to participate or do anything, and if they say something you don't understand, you can rewind.

I also like Big Planet Comics podcast. Three comic book store employees from a local DC chain talk about comic books, mostly #1 issues. Also, they discuss upcoming comics-related news and answer listener questions. (I recently sent them 13, they're doling them out slowly.) This is the best of what an LCS can do for you. (Aside from adding stuff to your pullbox that you would definitely like.)

Criminal is a very calm podcast about crime. Sometimes it talks about a case from the POV of the criminal, sometimes the investigator, sometimes the victim, sometimes the falsely accused. Sometimes it's not about a specific incident, but about criminal (investigation) procedure. But it is very much interested in letting someone tell their story. It can be funny. As much as a story about crime can be, it can be sweet. Sometimes the crimes are brutal, sometimes they're property crimes, sometimes it's a story about skirting the law. It's a very human sort of podcast.

No Such Thing As A Fish is an extremely informative laugh riot. Researchers for the British quiz show QI each share their favorite fact, and some facts related to that fact, and they try to crack everyone up while doing it. Often, they succeed.

Some bonus stuff I don't feel like writing up, but definitely do recommend: Pop Culture Happy Hour, Planet Money, 99% Invisible (about design, broadly speaking), The Vergecast (tech nerds talking way too long), The comiXologist.

Someone on my friend's list got their first smartphone, and I unleashed more information than they were probably looking for. However, I have decided to crossshare with you, because I can.

[personal profile] seperis has a lot of good recommendations for playing with Android. Also, if you think of a sort of program you would like, google Android [program] best, and only look at lists from the past 3 months (things move too fast in the app space.) Also, lifehacker has lots of recommendations, with lots of explanations as to why something is good or bad.

Google Now should already be in your phone. I mostly follow hockey and get flight information and package delivery info from it. Google also does maps and navigation integration, has a shopping app, does gmail, and youtube. That should already be installed.

It becomes apparent that I spend too much time on my phone. )

So, one of the people I follow on twitter is [twitter.com profile] bibliotech and she's awesome in that she's always posting links to new social media/app websites, but, like, 70% of the time I look at the website and think, but why?

And I thought "but why?" when I first saw Rebel Mouse, but then I started my own, and it's actually amazing.

It grabs the links from my social media feeds (it could do more feeds if I were more interesting, but at this point it's grabbing from dreawmidth, twitter, and google plus for me. You can also do Facebook, instagram, flicker, tumblr, pinterest, and any random rss link.) And it makes you a front page, sort of like the Huffington Post front page. It includes an image or video automatically, if the link has that.

I love it, it's amazing. Not that anyone is following me, but it actually serves as a really clear picture of the things I'm interested in. I go look at it every day or two and I think, "Yes, that's me in a web nutshell."

Follow me on RebelMouse!

Just posted! And very beautiful! Sidney Crosby primer from [personal profile] maskitheclown

I should just collect the best primers I can remember. Ok.

Ovechkin primer includes Alex/Sasha, Ovie/Sid, and Sasha/Zhenya
PK Suban/Carey Price primer
Ballad of Richie/Carts (Sadly not updated to reflect the LA Kings' STANLEY CUP win. But still heartwarming.)

There's a Brioux primer somewhere from before when Claude moved out that I can't find. :( Link me if you got it? Also, has anyone done a primer for the Oilers' kid line?
