We Invented the Remix Redux
Sunday, 29 April 2007 18:55I wrote two stories for remix.
Title: Helping Hands (Five Fingers Extended Mix)
Author: zvi (
witchqueen)
Summary: Five alien sexual encounters John Crichton never experienced in the Uncharted Territories.
Fandom: Farscape
Pairing: John Crichton/Rygel, John Crichton/D'Argo, John Crichton/Zhaan, John Crichton/Chiana, John Crichton/Gilina
Rating: NC-17
Warning: Rape
Original story: Helping Hands by
kernezelda
(You just have to remember that this never happened.)
Title: This Sleepover Thing (Official Subtext Loop)
Author: zvi (
witchqueen)
Summary: It behooves us to befriend her. Because otherwise it would be awkward and cause tension. Which is totally unlike the way we normally operate.
Rating: PG
Fandom: Grey's Anatomy
Characters: Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, Callie O'Malley
Spoilers: Takes place after My Favorite Mistake
Original story: Compare and Contrast by Amy (
fox1013)
(This Sleepover Thing)
I like them both a lot. I was very pleased with the five things story, since I've never written a five things before, although it's a genre I much admire. I just had difficulty picturing something I wanted to talk about five different ways.
I like them both because they feel very canonical to me, both of them, like they could have happened (or like This Sleepover Thing could be happening right now, as we speak.) And my recipients were pleased with both of them.
I ran into an interesting and different problem with remix this year, in that a lot of the stories I had to choose from were stories I wouldn't tell, in the normal course of events. That happened with An Honest Word, but
winterbaby's view of the characters differed radically from mine, in ways that I just couldn't map. It wasn't that I thought Amy or Kernezelda were telling stories about characters I couldn't relate to, but they told stories about them that I wouldn't have.
It's weird, because my normal takeaway from a story I wouldn't have told is, "Heh, that's nifty," and I admire it the way I would blacksmithing or equipage or novel-writing: very nice to look at, but nothing to do with me. By contrast, with An Honest Word, I was basically arguing with the original author about whether or not Scully's a doormat who needs rescuing. So, it was a bit like writing meta: you're wrong, you're so wrong, here are all the ways you have completely misunderstood the text.
With this year's remixees, I had a lot more stories where I felt like, "But she already told the story, what are you looking at me for, victoria?" I don't think I've really had that before.
The other thing is that there's a happier, pornier version of Sleepover Thing that's lurking in my in-progress file. I almost tried to push it to post on the remix due date, but I realized just in time that turning a gen story into Callie/Meredith/Cristina is against the rules. But now I keep poking at it, and I can't get the damn thing to finish, because 'Callie is a hot, hot thing and Meredith wants to fuck her' is failing to add up to a plot. :( But, um, go read my remixes and then tell me you like them.
Also, because I am a stupid crazy person who thinks playing with other people's words is one of the best parts of fandom, I signed up for
gateverse_remix. You should, too.
