zvi: (barcode)
I hate being sick. Friday, I woke up and didn't feel bruised and beaten, so I went into work. (I had been out of the office four business days, so there were some things I really need to get done.) I only made it until about quarter to two, and then I left work to get lunch, walk around a nearby shopping center a little bit (I was sort of hoping to buy a purse big enough to hold my 10" tablet, but I didn't see anything I really liked), until I could catch the bus home.

Today, I put away about six loads of laundry, including schlepping an ironing board up and downstairs, and I was wiped out. My breathing got fucked up so that talking made me cough, and I still feel quite subpar. (I can't tell if it's the impact of the laundry or if it's just me feeling shitty from the flu.)

Anyway, also today, I decided against reinstalling Ubuntu on my computer. (I was dual booting Ubuntu and Windows, but first my Windows partition got too small to be usefully updated, then my Ubuntu partition got too small to be updated, so I took it to a computer shop to be repartitioned, but they were kind of freaked out by the idea of installing Ubuntu, so I ended up having them wipe the hard drive and install Windows 10. I actually really like Windows 10 and One Note, and almost everything else I do, I do online.

So, I'm going to restore the data from my backup, but not Ubuntu. I'm pretty sure it's going to be easier, once I eventually get everything backed up. (Getting everything backed up is going to take forever, though. I'm doing it in chunks, as I'm trying not to download stuff that was saved multiple times on my hard drive. For some reason, nearly all of my podfic had been saved twice, for instance.

I feel a little sad about it, but also like it will make my life easier. I was never very political about free software, and dual booting is kind of a pain in the ass. It's the end of an era for me, though. :/

Got a new computer. I intended to turn it into a dual boot Windows/Ubuntu system, by having those two crazy kids share a data partition.

Windows doesn't want to shrink, and now I'm wondering if I should just kill the Windows system entirely, or if I should ditch Ubuntu. I've got one more set of tricks to try to make Windows play nice, and I can contact Dell to ask about Windows install disks (probably they'll blow me off, but maybe they'll sell them to me for a nominal fee.)

The thing is, I only really want Windows to deal with encrypted WMA files from the library, and I can't actually find the Mp3 player I would play those files on. But I feel like, the instant I got a clean Ubuntu install set up, I would find the mp3 player, because that is life.

Latest AO3 update

We finally get icons on the AO3. I hope that many people will choose an icon that resembles their default on their journal, so that I will recognize them when they comment there or look at their profiles. My icon on my default pseud over there is indeed the default icon from my DW account. Honestly, I use it as my default everywhere it fits, because (a) it looks like me and (b) I like having a consistent identity.

However, for my WitchQueen pseud (the 18 pieces of fanfiction I might otherwise have labeled juvenalia), I felt I had a lot more freedom. So I used [Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.] that [personal profile] lunaris1013 made for me. I used it for several years, and I like it better than the last default icon I used before this one, which was Jill Scott with zvi written on it. It honestly does bring back good memories.

Also, the "for X" bit on a story has been moved from under the author's name to the notes. I am not altogether certain how I feel about this. I mean, I was quite startled by the original placement, and this is approximately where I had actually expected it to be, but I feel a little "grr" at Notes: being added to fics where I didn't have notes before the fic.

Also, also, collections are not in chronological order anymore, which means Ladies' Choice has lost a great deal of its prominence, but does feel fairer. Also, they're more searchable, which makes them a great deal more useful. (I wonder if I shouldn't investigate reciprocal linking between related collections; I think there was a hetfic collection, and maybe pornbattle would reciprocate. Hmm…must give this more thought.)

And, last but not least, notifications of comments from someone who has an icon account links back to the pseud with which they commented, which is nice.

P.S. The latest Chromium build for Ubuntu and the latest Livejournal release hate each other, which was unfortunate for me, as I went ?skip=550 to catch up with my flist, since I hadn't read it since Monday. I really must read that thing more often. Even if it's largely wired.com and salon.com updates I'm not reading, and my locked download comm from which I'm not downloading, it's still a PITA to go through that much at once.

If I make hardlinks between the extension folders of my Firefox profiles, I bet that will make my Firefox profiles all have the same extensions.

Er, why didn't I find this out two years ago when I wanted to figure out how to share extensions between profiles?

You're kind of awesome. No, really, I like the things I can do with you a lot. Your one major drawback is somewhat sketchy flash playback, but I'm pretty sure that's partially caused by my computer's age … needs more processor speed or RAM, one of those.geekery )

1) Dude, you should always read the release notes. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04LTS (i.e. released the 4th month of 2008, with Long Term Support of 18 months [as opposed to the standard 6 months.]) TODAY I found out that my media player (Totem) has a plugin for surfing Youtube and viewing the videos in itself. This is, frankly, a goddamn huge boon, as Youtube crashes firefox not infrequently (although much less than all other videosharing technology.)

2) (re: [site community profile] dw_suggestions) How do the people who vote "should be implemented with changes" but who don't comment about the changes they'd like to see expect anyone else to intuit their desired changes? I mean, it's one thing if there's a pre-existing comment thread showing lots of desired suggestions, but if there's just votes, what are you thinking?

3) General Jinjur suggests putting a permission statement for fanwork-squared where people are likely to find it. I resisted doing this for a long time because I think fannish culture should have that assumption built in, that people shouldn't have to ask about remixing or dvd commentary or sequels or artwork. (Podfic is something of a grey area, I suppose, since it does constitute a complete copy.) But, jinjur points out that part of the reason the people who have many of their works podfic'd have them fic'd is that they've given blanket permission. So, I've added a statement to that effect to my userinfo, my fanlore entry, and my AO3 entry. Hey, podfficcers! Come read my stuff! Some people like it, I promise!

4) I got some feedback to my remix along the lines of (1) I don't like how unsympathetic Uhura was and (b) Uhura/Gaila, what? that wasn't in the original.

And this startled me Read more... )

5) I want to buy Jay-Z's D.O.A. Death of Autotune. That is hot. But I can't use iTunes (Linux user, I refuse to install Wine for 1 program), and I haven't bought from Amazon since the gay thing. I usually buy mp3s from 7digital, but they don't have it. And I tried to buy it from Myspace Music, but they said I had to upgrade Flash. The last time I upgraded Flash, it crashed my browser a whole bunch, which is why I downgraded. :(
