Lan Wangji’s expression has only changed minutely—not a lot of range there, it seems—but Wei Wuxian can tell he is perturbed by this information. “Alcohol? In cake?”
“Honestly, I’m not sure any cake should even be made without alcohol,” Wei Wuxian says, offering another beatific smile that Lan Wangji does not return.

Summary:

Wei Wuxian has been happily married for fifteen years when his life comes to a crashing end. But he planned for this! He has an emergency talisman for just such an occasion, which should allow him to go back and fix the situation that killed him.

Just one complication… Lan Wangji won’t let him go alone.

An answer to: “What if Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had the chance to do it all over again, knowing what they know? How far would they go?”

This story is a low-conflict multicanon time-travel fixit that serves as a 50k denouement for The Untamed.

Complete! Now with bullet point extras!

This story is a little too low conflict for my usual tastes, but it's a balm to the soul if I'm feeling wound up, and the sequels featuring a queer poly relationship with Wei Qing do have the right amount of interpersonal drama for me.

I like happy or reconciling family feels. I'm looking for a story where I can feel the characters loving each other, even if that love winds up being complicated or there are other issues. I really love people discussing and negotiating their relationships, where they know things have to be worked out because they love each other, but the working it out is actual work.

I like pregnancy fic where people experience their body changing and they accept and work with the changes, even if they don't enjoy them. If the biology of pregnancy is different from common, actual human pregnancy, then I would like you to do some worldbuilding around how the mechanism you picked works. I'm not that picky about whether it's a situation where mpreg is known and common, or it's a mad science experiment, or the character was always already a trans man, or a fertility goddess did it, but I just want you to explain to me (throughout the story, not in a big infodump) how it works. (By worldbuilding, I don't mean you have to make this stuff up from scratch; if you use ABO or mpreg tropes common in your fandom, I just want to know how they work) Three things I am not jazzed about in an ABO context; discrimination against a particular dynamic or babies born via the asshole, referring to partners as "mates"

Some tropes in pregnancy and babyfic that I like:
  • Alpha/Beta/Omega (especially alpha women or somehow oviposition is involved)
  • wish babies
  • alien/animal biology pregnancy and spinning out the worldbuilding implications of that (I read a great hockey story where pregnancy was in the style of a shark, with a clutch of eggs hatched internally, but then the pups stayed in and Hunger Games'd it out to see which single shark pup would be born)
  • food cravings
  • adoption
  • learning infant care basics
  • learning infant care basics and wondering how you survived to adulthood because your parents did it so wrong
  • lovingly disagreeing with your parents about how to raise your kid
  • being tired and dirty from caring for a baby and wondering how it is possible for such a small person to create so much mess and confusion
  • family and community helping with the baby
  • people playing with the baby
  • having complicated feelings about gender
  • having complicated feelings about parenting
  • not bonding with the baby immediately
The one trope I'm not a big fan of with pregnancy stories is morning sickness, and in baby stories, I'm not interested in super precocious babies. It's fine if their parents are convinced that they're precocious, but let the baby be a baby.

Some stuff I like in general: a long list of things I like which could spark your imagination, but I absolutely do not expect you to incorporate more than one or two things. It's a long list! )

Dear Worldbuilding Exchange Creator: I am [archiveofourown.org profile] zvi

I'm happy you want to write something for me, I'm eager to see your own thoughts and ideas about the worlds we share an interest in, and I'm writing this letter so you can read it and so you can get some ideas, but I've put in kind of a lot of thoughts (in the generic areas more than in the individual fandoms) and I don't expect you to pay attention to all of it.

Write what you want, it's all good. (Except the choking, I never like that.)

The stuff I like about worldbuilding is drawing out the implications of canon. If we see in canon that people eat like this, what does that say about their agriculture? What does that mean about how people share food or don't? What did food mean in the context of how the protagonist grew up? Anything like that. And it doesn't have to be about food; what about transportation, or education, or religion, or childrearing? But then build a story about that; people share food to create a close bond, but the protagonist's allergies meant they couldn't safely share food, so they grew up socially isolated and with really particular tastes, so they cook and give food away but they can't accept food, and they still make people uncomfortable because they can't really participate in the food exchange culture.

Some stuff I like in general:
• character backstory
• queerness
• found family (particularly of the 'we've been through a hell no one else will understand' variety)
• Casefic/could be an episode fic
• stories where the protagonists fit into a broader community, especially but not limited to the other canon characters
• relationship negotiations
• MPREG, AUs (especially ABO, soulbond, supernatural masquerade [i.e. people are secretly werewolves, vampires, etc. but it's kept secret from mundanes]), kidfic, pregnancyfic
• trope inversion and crack treated seriously (but nothing from the POV of inanimate objects)
• Sex scenes or kinky/bdsm scenes that advance the plot or reveal something about character
• safer sex, cunnilingus, vaginal fisting, rimming, fingering, sex toys, and pegging
• lactation kink, real or simulated; joyfully adopted feminization of male-identifying characters; size kink not related to feminizing or emasculating; informal power imbalance, where it's not that they've explicitly negotiated a scene, just that these two people aren't in equal stations in life, and they both are aware of that, and it's just part of how they relate to each other; watersports and omorashi

zvi: Jill Scott closeup: for the joy it brings (for the joy it brings)

Dear Holly Poly Creator:

I’m sorry I didn’t have this letter ready to go when matching went out. I’ve been going through some stuff and I only just managed to sign up.

Fanfiction: I suspect you feel like you have much more than enough information about my general fanfiction likes and dislikes. I just want to reassure you that I don’t expect (or even want) everything I suggested as a like in one story, I’m fine with both very porny and completely sex-free fic, and I’m very much looking forward to whatever you come up with.

Fanvid: Just FYI, I’d rather a shorter, clearer vid using just part of a song than one you wound up padding a bit because you picked a great song that’s too long. Music I like: 80’s and 90’s hip hop, R&B, pop punk, Lillith Fair music, Christmas music, Quiet Storm music, music for the grown and sexy, trip hop, post-rock. I generally avoid male singer-songwriters, folk music you can’t dance to, and country music. Here’s my my pop music pandora station if you want some ideas.

I’m in favor of subtitles or burn in captions if you want me to understand the lyrics or pay attention to a specific bit of dialogue. My auditory processing isn’t amazing, so the clearer the lead singer the better I like it

Podfic: As I said, my auditory processing isn’t the best, so if you could avoid playing music under where you’re speaking I would appreciate it. I also tend to play my podfic pretty loudly, so if you can match the volume of any music you include to your speaking volume, that would be great. I actually really like low production (i.e., just your voice, no music and no effects) podfic, but add whatever flourishes make you feel great.

Dear IPQ Writer,
I don’t care that much if the story is explicit and kinky or if it’s kid-friendly, so long as it’s relationship focused and has a happy ending. Unless they’re teenagers, I’d really prefer people talk out their feelings and let people know what’s going on with them, or, if they’re deciding to stuff down their feelings and ignore them, let them actually stuff down their feelings and ignore them. Let’s not do too much pining, thank you.

zvi: Judith Light as Hedda Gabler: Theatre Critic (theatre critic)
Last night I saw Be More Chill staged by the Monumental Theatre Company.

There are a lot of little theater companies in DC doing very good work, and I would like to go see more of it. I like live theater, and the TodayTix app #notsponsored makes it pretty simple to find something to see, even if there are no guarantees about quality.

Speaking of quality: I liked the feel of the company itself; they were set up in the black box theater of Episcopal High School (a local elite boarding school roughly the size of my tiny liberal arts college), they had cute company t-shirts, they served alcohol and were quite chill.

The show on the other hand…. Since I'm now old enough that I think Benny Was Right (RENT), maybe I should have guessed a high school musical was not going to work for me. Also, this is the original version of script and score from the pre-Broadway run; I hope that it tightened up some off-Broadway.

But the music, lyrics, and characters felt generic and archetypical, rather than specific. They genderflipped the computer (why does the computer have a gender‽) to "look like Buffy the Vampire Slayer" instead of Keanu Reeves, and did some staging adjustments to avert some rape-y implications. A lot of the pop culture stuff felt dated (maybe this will ease into period in the next twenty years? If this show is around in 20 years? Please don't be around in 20 years.) The protagonist was also terrible. His only desire was for Christine, but what was it that the liked about her, specifically? I watched the whole damn musical and I do not know. Jeremy had no interests (except for porn), no wants (except for his dad to put on pants), and no relationships except with his stoner best friend, Mike.

One thing that is weird and frustrating about this show is that Jeremy insists that Christine is the only romantic connection worth having, but since he doesn't articulate* what, specifically, makes her intriguing, it's never clear why the warm and sexy relationship he has with Brooke is not enough to satisfy his romantic aspirations.

If I were younger, I could see projecting myself into these lifeless, feckless, undifferentiated characters, but I'm not and I didn't.

*The music mix was bad. The band drowned out the performers for part of every song. Maybe Jeremy said what Christine special to him in his song about her, but I honestly didn't hear it.

Despite the material and the band mix, most of the actors got a decent glory note moment, just enough energy and face to make me want to watch them in something good. I especially liked Caroline Dubberly as The Squip and Christian Montgomery as Michael. Nigel Rowe as Rich really made the most of his song, but not much else. The only complete snore was Jonathan Helwig as Jake.

I'll keep my eyes out for future Monumental Theatre Company productions, but I'm not going to bother with Be More Chill again.

zvi: Toccara looking fine and sexy (Reality Television)
I got plenty of things done today, just not the paid work I've been putting off for…not quite a month. Whoops. Monday is another day (100% I'm not doing it Sunday.)

I did watch yet another episode of Nate and Jeremiah by Design. Poppy is ever so slightly less adorable than she was in season one; I think this has to do with the change from chubby toddler to small child. She's lost some roundness.

I think it's weird they've done 10 episodes and none of the home owners have presented as queer, although maybe queer people don't own homes and half-ass reno them the way the show clients do. Like, either we can't afford our own homes or when we do, we plan better than the disasters they're showing here, most of which seem to be 75% the clients' fault. Or maybe they've had queer clients in mixed gender relationships who didn't want to put all of their business on TLC.

Anyway, Jeremiah's face is the best thing about this show, both in the way that he's very handsome, but also how he mugs for the camera when Nate is exasperating.

P.S. I've decided to jump right back into journaling, so if there's a slight sensation of my starting a conversation in the middle, well, the other part is in my head. #sorrynotsorry
