Con Reports, Long Overdue

So, in June, there was con.txt, which was awesome. It was, as usual, beautifully run, even despite the fact that the hotel was under construction while we were there.

I got in Thursday and had dinner with, uh, trixiesfic, arallara, hederahelix, and some other people. Then we went to see the Avengers, again. We stayed right through schwarma, which, you know, I really like this movie, but they're not doing anything in that scene. I don't get it.

( Sunday ) This con.txt, I really did a lot of panelling, which is something I haven't done at a con in maybe 3 years, not even so much at the last con.txt. Although the conversations were mostly not super deep, I really enjoyed having them in a semi-structured way with people I don't know or don't know well. Did regret not seeing more of Aral and Hederahelix and even Zana. It seems like I can pick socializing or panels, and that is all the social energy I have for a weekend.

Two weekends ago I went to Con*Strict. As this year's attendance was down to about twenty, it was more in the way of a pajama party than a con, but I had fun there too. Due to some bizarre Vegas-ness (Joey Fatone was hosting the Price is Right Live, so that killed my Friday afternoon, and then getting tickets to Zumanity killed my Saturday afternoon) I missed a lot of time hanging out at the con itself (and in the hotel pool), but I got to spend a lot of time with Caorann and I did spend some time in the con, just chilling with people, talking about how weird Vegas is (it's drier than winter but so hot!), having a little Avengers squee and telling people why Once Upon a Time had/has potential. I came away with some tv from the back of the internet, Lost Girl and Once Upon a Time and Teen Wolf, so I can see what all the fuss is about. It was fun and I've already paid my membership for next year, but I think that I will go a day or two early and stay a day or two late so I can check out Vegas more thoroughly.

Also, I bought a bunch of Chihuly postcards, so I will send some out to people whose addresses I have, because I love that glass, it's so sexy.

Hmm, I had some thoughts about ~religion~ that I wanted to share with you, dwircle, but I've been writing for two hours without any dinner, and also I need to clean my room, so laters.

There are a number of panels that look good on the full con.txt schedule that I'm not going to attend or that I'll see what I feel like once I get there. I'm getting in Thursday night. Anyone looking to dinner somewhere that's not the hotel restaurant? I bought a box lunch for Saturday but I'll probably be looking to lunch out on Friday (unless I go swimming.)

I still need need to get a new icon. :/

So, I am going to con_txt next month, and, because I thought this panel sounded totally awesome and there was a good chance it wouldn't happen if I didn't volunteer to mod it, I volunteered to mod the panel described thusly:

Hot Girl on Girl Action In stories, we mean. Not Live. Probably. How to write good f/f porn, where to promote it, and how to encourage more to magically appear.)

That sounds like a totally awesome panel, right? Well, I have a teensy, tiny problem, in that I have been sort of…distanced from fandom lately? Like, I never post to my LJ, and I don't write any more (fic or meta or even episode reactions), and I do not know what the best place is to promote f/f stories right now. If there are new and fascinating places to post one's femslash that are not girlgay or femslash_today, I would really love to hear about them.

Also, if you have thoughts or feelings about either how to write more f/f porn or how to encourage more f/f porn, I would love to hear that also. I may even, depending on the scope of my lazy, create a wee little handout for people at my panel to take home.

Basically, what I am saying is, help me help us get more femslash going. Please, yes, thank you!

Care and Feeding of Your Thing-a-thon

I'm not doing a "proper" panel write-up, but I did re-create my notes for the Care and Feeding of Your Thing-a-thon panel. If you have more questions that weren't answered there, or if the notes make you think about something, feel free to ask in comments.

They are sort of focused on exchange challenges, because (a) that's the type I like the best and (b) most of the problems for other types of challenges come up in exchange challenges.

One thing I didn't mention in the notes, because it came up in the panel, not my notes.

If you're running a kinkmeme, you should get every single comment to the meme e-mailed to you, so you can reconstruct what happened if something goes wrong, and keep monitoring the meme as it goes forward.

Also, if something blows up, whether it's unfunny_business or fandom_wank, the reaction should be:

Amend/explicate/correct in the same place as the initial problem
Freezing comments is better than deleting/screening already public comments
Screening future comments (and making clear rules for what gets unscreened) is a better way to slow discussion down than disallowing all comments.

Con.txt 2010

So, the weekend was sort of defined by my decision to wear bad shoes, and ignore the subsequent ankle pain. I have flat feet, and I was wearing these sandals with a tiny bit more wedge in them than I am used to, and I felt pretty much fucked for a good deal of the weekend. So, lesson learned: my next con will be accomplished entirely in sneakers and slippers.

The only bad part of con.txt was that I didn't hang out with some people I wanted to.

I pretty much entirely missed Melannen, and I did entirely miss bethbethbeth, and even though I went to the same dinner as Brak, we wound up at opposite ends of the table, and I don't think I actually cuddled with Synecdochic (although I did cuddle with SarahQ, which I had really wanted, so that was good!) And, I did not meet very many people I did not at least Internet-know already, which is a little disappointing. Meeting new people (and perhaps then getting to Internet-know them!) is one of the pleasures of going to cons.

So, I do hope that my next con.txt should be very similar, except with better shoes and fewer panels. (I did, indeed, pre-register for 2012.)

(P.S. check out con_txt for more con reports and panel write ups. I will try to write panel write ups for everything except the Psych panel, which I am leaving to Aral, by the end of the week.)

P.P.S, JFC, this took two hours to write.

Anybody need a roommate for just Thursday night? (I have a room and roommate Friday and Saturday nights, but I only today decided I wanted to go in Thursday and see who was around and stuff, and roll casually out of bed Friday morning at 9:15, instead of commuting from home and leaving at quarter to 8. *eyeroll*

If nobody wants a one night only roommate, does anyone know where the roomshare post is on the journal? I couldn't find it on a quick lookthrough.

Friday Fic

So, last week I decided that on Friday, when I inevitably did not have any journals, comms or feeds for Follow Friday, and decided to offer a fic meme instead, that I would just read back on the Latest Tag:Meme feed, until I found an interesting fic meme and used it.

This week it's all filled with a bunch of non-fic memes, so that didn't work out.

So, instead ... point me to a kinkmeme or commentfest prompt that you wish I would tackle. Let's stick with fandoms for which I've already written, but excluding SGA and adding in NCIS: LA.

In other news, a bunch of my panels either definitely got picked or probably got picked for con.txt, so I've definitely signed up to mod four panels. (I don't know if that makes you happy or sad.)

I'm looking for a co-mod for the Femslash panel I'm doing. Mine is not the meta one, mine is "This is not the recruiting panel." A name which is actually a bit misleading, as I do want it to be a recruiting panel, but, like, a Ship Manifesto recruiting panel, not a If we can focus, keep discipline, and not have quite as many mysterious deaths, Femslash is gonna rule! recruiting panel. (And, yes, I will even set aside 7 minutes at the end for people to gush about The Good Wife, even though I Do Not Get It.) Honestly, I mostly want someone to help me brainstorm pairings we can talk about ahead of time, in case the audience doesn't have that many pairings it wants to recruit for.

Also, I am feeling of two minds about whether or not I want to mod "They Fight Crime…More or Less." On the one hand, I actually do think it's a wickedly interesting topic, on the second hand, FIFTH PANEL OF THE CON, ZOMG. I actually want to go swimming, if it's warm enough. I want to have lunch! I want to talk to Caorann and Brak and Bethbethbeth and…people. Outside of panels. Someone might want to make out with me! I might want to attend someone else's panel. Just occasionally.

What do you think, dear readers? Fifth panel? Someone I should nominate to lead it? (I thought about asking LaT, because I think it would be really entertaining watching her lead a panel about Chaotic Good and Lawful Neutral characters. [LaT is deeply into Lawful Good; favorite characters include Benton Fraser, Commodore Norrington, Superman, and Carlton Lassiter.] But then I thought the con would be more fun if her head stayed on her shoulders, instead of exploding.)

Also, also: tell ConComm that you want a bar at VidShow! A Bar at VidShow is a Vote For Awesome!

con_txt! Awesome fun! Really well-run con!

Okay, to tell you the truth, I need a bunch of you to register and then send e-mails to the con comm saying, "Dude, there should be a bar for the vid show." Because I want there to be a bar for the vid show, but they can only do it if they're guaranteed to rack up a certain amount of sales, blah blah blah businesscakes.

Bottomline: drunken!vidshow > sober!vidshow. I need you to do this for me, dear readers, I can't do it on my own.

If you are wondering what sort of panels would be at the con, you can take the 2010 con.txt panel survey. I don't know how many panels will make it; my back of the envelope calculation is, if there are three panel rooms there will be roughly 24 panels, but I could be wrong about the number or the frequency of panels. In any case, go vote. (5 dreamwidth points to the person who guesses the most panel suggestions that came from me. Concomm not eligible.)

Why should you go to con.txt? Because you can meet me! If we are mutually so inclined, you can make out with me! You can see me dressed like my icon! You can eat dinner with me! You can dance with me at Disco Duck!

(If you are subscribed to my journal because I'm on your enemies list, you can mock my hair and complete lack of makeup and penchant for wandering around the hotel in slippers. Also, the way I set my cellphone alarm to tell me when to go to panels.)

And if I am not that interesting to you (but I should be, since you are subscribed to my journal) you will get to meet lots of other interesting fen. You might be able to make out with them or dance with them at Disco Duck. You will definitely have the opportunity to share discussion and meals with them. There will be room parties with cuddle piles. And vids. (Although, please god, help me avoid any C6D room parties; my life will be complete if I never see another vid of some Canadian film I've never heard of to some male singer songwriter I don't know.) And episodes of shows you love and movies you've never heard of. And spontaneous art projects.

WARNING: I'm shy in unstructured social situations. I am awesome on panels. I am mousewoman just hanging in the consuite, but I do want you to talk to me. I just draw a blank when faced with the prospect of small talk.

Also, the hotel has a pool! There are decent restaurants in walking distance of the hotel! Also, a mega bookstore; I think Borders but possibly Barnes & Noble. Also, a multiplex! The A-Team and Toy Story 3 should be around. Iron Man 2 might still be out. The Smithsonian museums are various short Metro rides away. The National Aquarium in Baltimore is about forty-five minutes away by car, and made of awesome.

So, on zazzle, I can make a navy long sleeved shirt with a white doublevenus on the front. (Sadly, they do not offer any men's v necks, and all of the women's shirts would be very tight.)

Points to ponder for looking like my icon. I have duck slippers, but I don't currently have bunny slippers. Will people notice if I substitute duck for bunnies?

Remote control, y/n/my XO-1 (the little green laptop that looks like a toy) is an adequate substitute?

Also, do I dress like my icon on the first day of the con, when people who haven't seen me before might be looking for me, or on the second day, which will have higher traffic and more people to get the joke?

Also, also, someone should suggest a panel I would really like to mod. I think the issue I'm having is that, of the fandoms I would like to talk about, only in one is my primary pairing a slash pairing, and there's nothing to say about Shawn/Gus except MFEO. The end. (Shawn/Lassiter shippers, I'm sorry, but you are wrong.) Well, also, in Castle, there's Ryan/Esposito, what is the heterosexual reading of this text?

Back from Grandma's

I didn't get the LiveDVD working, so I was computerless for the week I was at my grandmother's. That was okay, though, Grandma and I watched The Price is Right and Let's Make a Deal a bunch, and some As The World Turns. (I first watched ATWT for the Nuke/Loah storyline, when Martha Byrne had the role, and it still freaks me out that Noelle Beck is playing her now.) Also, we ate food and took naps. It was cool.

Anyway, bunch of stuff happened while I was gone, as I totally expected. I had to go to skip 700 to catch up on Dreamwidth, which was … not fun, but not the most painful experience of my life either.

con_txt registration is open. $90 until December 31. As slash media cons go, con.txt is expensive, but they do give it back to you in making the whole experience run nice. I think you should, whenever you have contact with a member of ConComm, express the hope for a bar for vid show night. The difference between a vid show 'loud' room with a bar and a vid show 'loud' room without one is profound, and I find it's a much more pleasant experience with a bar.

- The Yuletide Brainstorming Post is already way too big for me to navigate and figure out if the stuff I want is there, so I'm just going to figure out what I plan to request and work from there.
  The problem is, I don't know what I want to request. Last January, my plan was to request the incredibly obscure Razia's Shadow, plus two Les Liaisons Dangereuses prompts, plus a Dangerous Liaisons prompt. I really, really, really want someone to write me a story about Merteuill and Cecile Volanges getting it on, or possibly an AU of Merteuill seducing the Presidente herself, in order to put the kibosh on Valmont's plans. On the other hand, the past year has introduced me to the wonders of Die Hard 4, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, HIMYM, NCIS: LA, I would like some Glee fic about Mercedes and Tina to wash the bad aftertaste of the show out of my mouth, I could request Psych because I love it so, Leverage is pretty much my baby, etc., etc., etc. And I didn't get that Roads of Heaven fic I was hoping for last year. Oh, Yuletide, why do you force me into the hard choices?
- Last but not least: 3_ships is open. Signup for I Saw Three Ships is open from now until October 30.
and NaNoWriMo has opened for registration. Very exciting. I won last year, and I'm going to try to win again this year. Write or Die is a web tool that can really help you write. Dr. Wicked has said he should have a desktop version available by November 1, but I'll believe it when I see it, honestly.
